In an era when the world is facing the undeniable threat of climate change, the Netherlands has resolutely established itself as a pioneer in renewable energy. The Dutch government has embarked on a large-scale energy transformation leading the country towards a future of renewable and environmentally friendly energy sources. But what is driving this national effort?

Why is the Dutch government devoting so many resources to large-scale energy projects? This blog takes an in-depth look at the motivating factors behind these efforts and highlights why these projects are crucial not only for the future of the Netherlands, but also for the global fight against climate change. Let’s dive into the world of sustainability together and discover why the Netherlands is so determined to walk greener paths.

6 reasons for the Dutch government to implement major energy projects

Below we describe the Dutch government’s six main reasons for commissioning major energy projects:

1. Energy transition: One of the main reasons is the transition to renewable energy sources. The Dutch government is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and meeting climate targets, as agreed in international treaties such as the Paris Agreement. Large energy projects, such as offshore wind farms and solar installations, contribute to the shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources

2. Energy security: By investing in energy infrastructure and projects, the government can secure the country’s energy supply. This is crucial to keep the economy running and ensure reliable electricity supply.

3. Employment and economic growth: Large energy projects create jobs in the construction, maintenance and operation of energy infrastructure. They can also attract investment and stimulate the growth of the green energy sector, benefiting the economy.

4. Energy independence: By investing in national energy projects, the Netherlands can become less dependent on foreign energy sources, which benefits national security.

5. Innovation and technological development: Large energy projects provide opportunities for innovation in renewable energy technologies and can contribute to the development of new energy generation and storage solutions.

6. Climate adaptation: The Netherlands is sensitive to the effects of climate change, such as sea level rise and extreme weather events. Energy projects can also be used for climate adaptation, for instance by building dykes and flood defences.

Examples of national energy projects

The Dutch government is currently working on several major projects. Some of these are:

  • A nationwide transport network for hydrogen;
  • Bringing energy ashore from offshore wind farms;
  • Projects creating more space on the electricity grid;
  • Projects to capture and store CO2.

Approach

The government wants to realise the sustainability of major energy projects as soon as possible. The Multiyear Energy & Climate Infrastructure Programme (MIEK) lists energy projects that form an important basis for the long-term energy infrastructure. Together with stakeholders, the government wants to realise these important projects as soon as possible. This will be done by:

  • Finding and resolving any bottlenecks;
  • Sharing knowledge with the parties involved;
  • Helping them make decisions on, for example, financing and choice of location.

A total CO2 reduction of 49 megatonnes by 2030 has been agreed in the Climate Agreement. If these projects are completed on time, together they will already provide up to 38 Megatonnes of CO2 reduction, according to research by the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency.
